Thursday October 27th – Saving My Worms, Whiskey, and Microsoft Excel

Tonight was a pretty successful yet probably uneventful evening.  I had to troubleshoot my vermiculture composting bin because my worms were freaking out trying to crawl out of the bin.  So I did some research and figured out how to fix the solution.  I’ll find out in a week or so whether or not what I did will work.  Then I spent some time doing a few logistical things with my blog.  I updated the Facebook page I created a few weeks ago and then came up with an excel spreadsheet that will help me analyze my photo-blog challenge this month.  As evidenced in the quality of my photos this month, my point with this challenge was not to be artistic, it was to take a look at my lifestyle through random photos (10 or so every day at randomized time points).  So like a good engineer I’m going to do a bit of analysis afterward to look at trends and whatnot.

Self explanatory; reading Dracula on the train.

When I went to put my week's food scraps in my compost I saw that my worms were buggin' out and trying to crawl out of the bin. I did some research online and realized that my bin was probably too wet, so I added some dry newspaper bedding to help absorb the moisture. I'll check it again next week to see if it's less moist and if my worms are happy again.

image

I read online that your bedding should take up 3/4 of your bin. I was putting minimal bedding in assuming that the worms would be happy playing in the composted material in the bottom, but apparently they hang out in the bedding area. So I filled the bin about half-full with dry newspaper pieces (to help absorb excess moisture). I'll check next week to see if anything has changed.

Checking out my Blog's Facebook Page. When I upload a blog post it is automatically Tweeted (@youngandurban) and my Twitter feed is embedded in my Facebook page. This way now people besides my friends on Facebook and my Twitter followers can follow my updates. Like me on Facebook! http://on.fb.me/slQvpI and follow me on Twitter @youngandurban

More Twitter stuff on Facebook. If anyone knows how to make my twitter feed my landing page for my Facebook page, please let me know, that'd be great, thanks.

Devising a way to analyze my randomized photo blog. I'm basically counting up how many pictures I took throughout the month and then categorizing them; inside, outside, with friends, in transit, physical exertion, etc. This will help me to "calculate" how I am spending my time and thus what is important to me. Is this how I want to be spending my days as a freshly new 25 year old? Less working and more playing outside maybe.

Watching the Bruins lose horribly in a crappy game instead of watching game 6 of the baseball world series. I don't know how we messed that one up, I guess we were just over-stoked for the hockey season. The baseball game was apparently unreal, walk-off homerun in the 13th inning, bummed I missed it.

Enjoying some Knob Creek Kentucky Straight Burbon Whiskey while coming up with a good excel sheet to analyze the content of my photo blog.

I’ll find out in a week or so whether or not my solution of adding dry paper scraps to my compost will help to dry it out a bit.  Also, I’m going some time over the next few days going through my month’s pictures and plugging info into the excel spreadsheet that I made; am I inside/outside, with/without friends, being physically/intellectually stimulated, etc.  I’m interested to see how it turns out.  I’m excited for Halloween weekend, lots of time with good people, hopefully a few adventures, and most importantly it’ll be the first weekend in a longggg time that I haven’t been in NH hiking.  So I’m looking forward to hanging out in Boston for once instead of being out in the woods every weekend (although I much prefer the latter).

Sunday October 23rd – The (Anti-Climactic) Aftermath

After the dust settled on the next day, activities included eating a gargantuan meal at Tilton Diner, paying off some school loans at home, a nap, more food, a bit of indoor biking to test out my bike trainer, and cookies/pie from my roommate’s mom :) all-in-all it was a good Sunday.

9:00 - Nothing like reading some Dracula over breakfast, for some reason reading about vampires makes me hungry. Generally just moving pretty slow and helping to clean up the Loj here and there.

10:00 - Heading down I-93 to Tilton Diner for breakfast and "eyeballing" epic amounts of coffee. If you don't know what eyeballing is, just youtube it for a video demonstration. I wasn't sure I had a ride home until this morning. However, getting stuck in NH for the weekend wouldn't have been the worst thing ever.

11:00 - Had a massive breakfaast; 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 sausage, homefries, toast, and coffee, all for like $7.

12:00 - Back on I-93 heading back to Bean Town.

1:00 - Back at the apartment looking at college loan stuff to make sure I'm not defaulting on any of my loans. Also, I cut the last check to finally pay off one of my smaller but high interest loans, thank god. Still have thousands of dollars to go but it's nice to check one off the list.

2:00 - I set up my bike and bike trainer in the living room. I was feeling motivated to do some exercise, just didn't want to go outside :)

(I spent a few hours napping and then missed an alarm for a photo so I’m a few short today, my bad, but I don’t really feel THAT bad)

7:00 - Cooking rice, broccoli and chourico for dinner/lunch.

8:00 - Graham brought food back from home; loaf of homemade bread, an apple pie, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate cookies with marshmallow and chocolate icing. Basically I told him he should go home every weekend from now on.

I managed to crawl into bed around 9:00 and P.T.F.O., I was caught in a dilemma between exhaustion and not wanting work on Monday to come any faster than it needed to, but sleep won this time.

Thursday October 20th – After Work Workout and OUTDOOR GEAR

I felt pretty energized after work so I stayed a bit later in order to work out.  The lab I work in has a set of free weights and other various exercise equipment so I am super lucky to avoid paying for gym memberships which can be more than $80/month in the city.  If I don’t work out before work or during lunch then I will usually exercise after work and get home around 7:30pm.  This time of year it is already dark at that time.  Soon enough it’ll be dark when I leave home for work and also dark when I get home from work, regardless of whether or not I work out.  I’ve got to find a way to work outside or something, not exactly an easy thing to do in New England winters.  Perhaps I’d settle for a job where I have a window to the outside or maybe even a projector on the wall with a scene of the outside (I work in a windowless basement, the people are great but the lack of windows is not).  Anyway, I digress, here are my pictures for Thursday:

Getting my swole on in the gym. This time I'm doing a Shoulders, Biceps, and Triceps routine from P90X. I did P90X once all the way through and since then I've sprinkled a few of the better workouts into my weekly routine. There's some good workouts in there but I wouldn't recommend paying the $100 for the DVD set.

Waiting for the train as the sun is going down.

Reading on the train. I had a coworker of mine who I ride the train with take this picture.

I stopped at North Station after work to go to Hilton's Tent City, an amazing outdoor sports store which is part new gear and part consignment. Had to pick up some miscellaneous pieces of gear for a project I'm working on.

Just got the book Dracula in the mail. In the spirit of Halloween I thought it'd be an appropriate choice. I'm getting kind of tired of reading about nutrition, plus I've always wanted to read this book so it's good timing.

Writing up my birthday blog post while watching the Bruins on TV.

My random phone alarm went off while I was shaving. Also, on the back of my phone that's a QR code that when scanned will take you to my blog. QR codes are great, I have one on my resume and business card that links to my Linkedin.com Profile. The QR code to my blog on my phone is convenient because when I'm talking to someone I can direct them straight to my blog on the spot. If you don't have a QR scanner on your smart phone, go download one, they're free.

Gear sprawl on the floor of my room. Getting things organized for my 48th peak this weekend.

Gchatting with Sarah (being shy) in between watching a few TED talks on my computer. I was watching a few videos that fit nicely with my 30-Day Challenge for November I'll reveal what it is later on this month.

Tomorrow I head up north yet again for another 4,000 footer.  I’ve been to New Hampshire every weekend for the past six weekends.  I’m excited to accomplish this goal but I’m also excited to do something on the weekends besides hiking.  It’ll be a welcomed change of pace to maybe stick around Boston for a weekend or two.  I’m heading to NYC in a few weeks to watch my roommate and another friend run the NYC Marathon so that should be a good time.  Can’t wait for growlers, burritos, nachos, the Loj, good company, and crushing my last 4,000 footer.
