Burritos, Nachos, Hiking and McDonalds at the Ballet?

I gave tofu another try today via a Boloco’s Classic burrito and again it let me down.  I really dislike the texture of tofu, it just tastes like non-descript mush.  No thanks.  I’ll save that food group for when I’m as old as my 89 year old landlords and don’t have any other choice but to gum down my food.  Perhaps by then I’ll have dentures made of titanium or we’ll have tissue engineered real teeth for replacements.  But I digress.  The moral of the story is that I’d rather have just rice, beans and veggies, I’ll be skipping to tofu for the next 64-ish years.

Boloco I love you but me and tofu don't get along. Blah.

Moving on from burritos at lunch to McDonald’s at the Boston Ballet.  What?!?! No worries, it wasn’t me eating the Big Mac.  Here’s the story:  For Christmas I took Sarah to the Boston Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker.  We went last year too and while I’m not the biggest ballet fan in the world, I was still very impressed with the level of performance and the raw athleticism.  Anyway, we dressed up, had a glass of wine and headed to the theater.  We crossed the street dodging and weaving  limo’s, porsches, and the like.  I always feel kind of out of place at functions like these, maybe it’s my Maine roots coming back up, but things like this (and money like this) didn’t exist where I grew up so it’s takes some getting used to.  However, now that I have some disposable income and can go to the ballet for the Nutcracker, it’s kind of a cool experience (expanding my horizons, yada yada).

I got a stern talking-to by the usher for taking this photo, apparently it's against the rules, my bad.

Anyway, we sit down in our seats next to a mother and daughter who it turns out are both scarfing down Big Macs from McDonalds.  We didn’t really know what to think.  Is this funny?  Is this sad?  Is this against the rules?  I think the answer to all of them was yes.  After a closer look we realized that their purses were stuffed with fries, additional burgers and fountain sodas.  How they managed to sneak in fountain sodas without spilling them all over the place is beyond me, but they looked like pros so I’m sure they had a system down.  After we got the giggles out we talked about it for a bit.  It was interesting how weird it seemed that we associated McDonalds with lower income families, yet these people were clearly pretty well off because our tickets weren’t exactly cheap.  So why did they opt for fast food?  Because it was fast?  It definitely wasn’t becuse it was cheap because I’m sure they definitely could have afforded a nice meal at a ritzy Back Bay restaurant but instead they opted for the $5 supersized McDonald’s meal, bizarre.  Is this what convenience in America has come to?  You’ll spend triple-digit dollars on a couple of ballet tickets but $5 on processed fast food?  I don’t get it.

The next day my company had our annual Christmas party.  It was great that we didn’t have to work for 2 hours on a Friday afternoon but all in all it was a huge fail.  We had to pay $10 to attend our own company’s party, wtf?  Also, there was a TON of food but not much in the way of vegetarian options.  There were a lot of ham and turkey sandwiches but nothing veggie.  So I grabbed some broccoli, tomatoes, mozzarella sticks, strawberries, a beer, and like 5 chocolate chip cookies and called it good.  I had skipped lunch thinking that my $10 would pay for my food but what you see in the picture below represents a $15 meal, pretty weak.

image

My work's xmas party neglected the vegetarians at the company. Not a single sandwhich was meat-less but there were some veggies and mozzarella sticks. Also, Yuengling in Massachusetts? Does Sam Adams know about this?!

Over the weekend Sarah and I went hiking to break in our new mountaineering boots.  We  wandered into the Franconia Range, not summiting any mountains but it was good enough just to get outside.  I don’t ever eat meat on hiking trips so being vegetarian hasn’t really affected my weekend adventures.  Meat doesn’t keep well on the trail anyway (unless it’s salami in the winter with a block of cheese, Mmmmm delicious).

On the Liberty Springs trail scarfing down a PB&J as we get smoked by a group of 4 New Hampshire old-timers. These guys are beasts so I'm ok that we got left in the dust (or snow?).

image

This is a signature of mine, PB&J with cereal in the middle, it gives it a bit of extra crunch to make things more interesting. This time it was Honey Bunches of Oats. Honey Nut Cheerios works well too. What doesn't work in between is tea, coffee grinds, pasta, or graham crackers. Don't ask, hiking in college was an experimental time for me.

It’s more or less a ritual to make nachos with cheese and black beans after a hike in the White Mountains.  So Sarah and I polished off almost this entire pan of nachos.  In the past we’ve put hamburg or shredded meat on top but generally it’s pretty simple, just chips, cheese, black beans, and salsa.

Aside from poutine, this is the best post-winter-hike snack on the planet.

Anyway, it’s been interesting trying to figure out what areas of my life are affected by going vegetarian and it’s turned out to be very few things.  Breakfast is largely the same, snacks are the same, hiking food is the same, it’s just that I’ve had to be more creative with my lunches and dinners.  I’ve also started to realize how to be a vegetarian is to be a minority.  I felt left out that our Christmas party didn’t really have a vegetarian option (besides a veggie platter).  I find myself saying, “Nah, I can’t eat that because I’m vegetarian” more often and I generally get weird looks or raised eyebrows, or the “he’s too good for meat?” look.  I don’t know if that’s what people are really thinking but that’s what it feels like.

Baby’s First Vegetarian Barbeque

My friends and I use the term “Baby’s First (fill in the blank)” to describe when someone does something for the first time.  Baby’s First Hike, Baby’s First Bruins Game, Baby’s First etc etc.  So today for me was Baby’s First Barbeque.  I was going to get ambitious and make a dish but I opted for veggie burgers from Shaws instead.  First however, here’s the outline of my day.

Sarah and I spent the morning cruising around Boston and we came across a CrossFit promo in Copley Square.  Apparently they are putting in a new gym in Back Bay and they were giving out Paleo-Muffins.  CrossFit is all about the paleo-diet.  It’s basically a hunter-gatherer diet where you eat only the things you would have been able to scavenge for, mostly nuts and berries with a huge de-emphasis on carbs and an over-emphasis on protein.  From the reading I’ve done, the paleo-diet has been discounted by nutritionists as a viable way to increase your level of athletic performance.  In order to perform at a high level, you need carbs (even in power lifting), the paleo-diet has a grudge against carbs and an emphasis on protein which people tend to abuse.  Carbs do not make you fat, it’s actually very difficult for your body to turn carbs into fat because evolutionarily your body wants to ingest carbs and then immediately use them for energy in your muscles.  It’s excess calories that make you fat, not carbs (sorry Atkins diet).  OK, enough pontificating, the moral of the story is that CrossFit as a workout is awesome, but these paleo-muffins tasted like sawdust, no thanks.

Nasty paleo-muffin from CrossFit table in Copley Square.

We then went to Boloco for lunch.  My go-to choice would have been an original classic with chicken but this time I went for the original classic with grilled vegetables.  I liked it well-enough but I prefer fresh and crunchy vegetables, not sautéed or boiled, give em’ to me right out of the ground.  Then Sarah brought up the fact that we’re “that couple”, the well-educated, city couple who are both vegetarians and who should probably move to Cambridge in order to fit in (no offense to the vegetarians in Cambridge, but you’re definitely a “type”).

Veggie Boloco Burrito after picking up my previously Macbook from the Apple Store.

That night my broomball team from Social Boston Sports was having a BBQ out in Somerville.  On the way there we picked up some Morning Star Veggie Burgers.  As usual I looked at them with disdain and skepticism, really doing it just because I have to.  I also picked up beer from Peak Organic out of Portland, ME.  My buddies busted my chops a little bit about bringing veggie burgers and organic beer.  I defended myself on the beer-front by explaining that Peak Organic is awesome beer regardless of how it was made, after they had a few they shut up about it.

image

Morning Star veggie burgers from Shaws, I heard they were the best so I picked them up.

image

Stuffing a veggie burger into my face. At first I wasn't 100% sure it wasn't a real burger. After consulting two of my vegetarian friends they confirmed it was indeed veggie.

image

I took a couple of small bites out of it to see if it was veggie or meat.

The veggie burgers were actually awesome.  I could hardly tell that they weren’t real burgers, I had to double and triple check to make sure my buddies weren’t pulling a fast one on me.  They definitely weren’t as tasty as real burgers but they were passable.  We noticed that most of the ingredients actually came from corn.  I’m learning that this is not uncommon when it comes to industrialized food.  We’re consuming more corn in our diets than ever before.  I can’t imagine that it’s corn itself that is the problem, but when it’s present in almost everything we eat then it certainly changes our diet as a culture in a drastic way.  I’m not sure what the impact of that is but it’s definitely a change from how we ate 30-40 years ago.

By the end of the night I reached an epiphany about being vegetarian.  For me, vegetarianism has always been associated with eating healthy.  The two are perhaps correlated but not synonymous.  You can eat as much junk food as you want, you just can’t eat meat.   You can be vegetarian and still be super unhealthy, this is something that I hadn’t considered before tonight.  So I had a bunch of peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies as well as beer (both organic and non-organic, I don’t discriminate) and Knob Creek bourbon whiskey.  I think I’ll probably be the only person who actually ends up gaining weight as a result of becoming vegetarian.

Ate a gratuitous amount of chocolate chip cookies at the BBQ. This sounds obvious, but being vegetarian isn't exactly about being healthy, it's just about not eating meat.

October’s Randomized Photo Challenge Wrap-up

The point of October’s life challenge was to take a critical look at my life outside of work.  Originally I had planned on taking pictures every hour throughout the day but I quickly realized that taking pictures at my work is actually illegal.  So in an attempt to avoid imprisonment or a large fine, I decided to look at my life after work and on the weekends.  Plus, work pictures would be pretty boring anyway; laptop, laptop, laptop, bathroom, laptop, etc.

I took a total of 336 pictures throughout October where each day landed somewhere between 8 and 15 pictures depending on whether or not it was a weekday or weekend and whether nor not I went to bed early, took a nap, or completely missed an alarm to take a picture.  For the randomized portion, I spent a good deal of September looking around for Android app developers or friends who were up to the challenge.  Unable to find anything in time I was able to find an app on the Android Market for diabetic patients who were looking to randomize their insulin shots.  Perfect!  Thank god for smartphone savvy diabetics.  The app worked exactly as I wanted; it would randomly alarm a set number of times between two time points (5pm and 11pm on weeknights and then from when I woke up to when I went to sleep on weekends).

After finishing on the 31st, I broke these pictures out into various themes that seemed important and calculated percentages; inside/outside, in my apartment, in Sarah’s apartment, with friends, with Sarah, in transit, physically/intellectually stimulating, and on my laptop.  I rarely watch t.v. (I admit that this probably makes me a bad Boston sports fan) so I didn’t feel like pictures in front of the t.v. was a relevant metric.  Here’s the break-down:

*Many of the photos fell under several categories at once so of course the sum of this list won’t add up to 100%.  Also, you would think that inside + outside should add up to 100% but I didn’t count transit (car/bus/train) or walking through buildings as being “inside”, I counted inside as really hanging out and spending time inside of a building.

Activity # of Pictures % of Total Pictures
Inside 148 44%
With Friends 109 32%
Outside 98 29%
Physically Stimulating 80 24%
With Sarah 76 23%
In Transit 72 21%
In My Apartment 61 18%
On My Laptop 40 12%
In Sarah’s Apartment 39 12%
Intellectually Stimulating 35 10%

These findings were actually quite interesting.  I knew that I rarely spent any time hanging out in my apartment but this analysis showed that less than 1/5th of my pictures took place inside of my apartment.  I generally go home to sleep and not much else so I’m not surprised, I just didn’t think it was as low as 18%.  Also it was interesting to see that my pictures in transit (on the train, bus, car, etc) outnumbered the pictures in my apartment by 3%.  I’m constantly going to and from places, which is great because it gives me a chance to read, people-watch, and it generally means I’m going to do something fun besides sit around at my apartment watching YouTube and drinking beers.

The winning category was inside pictures coming in at 44% of my pictures.  This might be a bit skewed due to the fact this month was rainy as hell and that I spent a few days home sick from work.  Either way it was reasonably close to how much time I spent outside, 29%.  I was glad to see that roughly 1/3rd of my pictures were taken outside.  This is mostly due to trying to finish my 48 peaks this month.  Outside pictures wouldn’t have been drastically less than 1/3rd of my total pictures but trying to complete this goal definitely helped keep my outside life thriving.

Another important metric was to see how much time I was spending with Sarah vs my friends.  That’s something I’ve always noticed with my friends who are in relationships, they tend to disappear off the face of the earth when they start dating someone.  I’m lucky that my friends and my girlfriend intersect pretty well and that I have a girlfriend who is down to adventure all the time.  So I don’t really have to make that choice between do I hang out with my girlfriend, or do I go out and have fun adventuring?  They generally coincide. I found that 23% of my pictures were with Sarah and 32% of my pictures were taken with friends.  This 32% would be drastically lower if I lived in a studio apartment.  Having friends as roommates is awesome, I’m not sure what I would do with myself if I lived alone.

Lastly, to wrap up, I spent about 1/4th of my pictures doing something physically active.  This has always been important in my life so I’m glad to see this experiment reinforcing that.  I spent about half that amount of time on my laptop (12%) mostly due to this blog.  Without the blog that probably would have dropped by half or more.  10% of my pictures involved me doing something intellectually stimulating.  In most instances this was reading while in transit, I didn’t count working on my blog as intellectually stimulating but one could definitely make a case for it.  Then there were 12% of my pictures where I was at Sarah’s apartment hanging out.  I spend a decent amount of time over there but I spend significantly more time at my own place, being outside, being physically active, being with friends, etc.

So from this analysis I think it’s pretty safe to say I have a fairly balanced lifestyle with an emphasis on fitness, being outdoors, and spending time with friends, often all of these coincide.

Here are a handful of my favorite photos of the month:

A pretty crucial group of people cruising in the hot tub after the Devil's Chase 10k. You guys are champions!

Sarah and I at the MassChallenge afterparty, what a blast, entrepreneurs are the best!

Rocking the Halloween costumes before hitting the town with our sweet (but totally lame) dance moves.

Finally finishing Sarah's guitar was an awesome feeling. It came out so good. Mega thanks to M.C. for being such a magician with the woodstain artistry.

Rocking my 47th summit, Mt. Isolation with Keith and Amy. Great view of the Presidential Range in the background.

Sarah and I spent several hours in a hammock 8 miles into the woods by a river and completely alone. I'm not sure it gets much better.

October 22nd 2011 - Sarah and I on top of Mt. Carrigain, my 48th summit, with a Woodstock Inn growler and a boloco burrito in-hand. Thanks also to Scuba and Dan for being part of it even though the roads were washed out and we hit some gnarly freezing rain up at the summit. Supposedly there's a great view haha, not today. I'll have to come back soon.

Wednesday October 26th – Door to Door Service with Burritos and Dental Hygiene

Today I gave a presentation at a conference for work.  It was pretty far out in Boston suburbia so I had to take the commuter rail for almost an hour to get there.  Then I took a $17 cab for less than 2 miles, wtf?!  So on the way back from the conference I secured a ride with someone to the train station.  Then just as I was leaving I found out that two of the consultants that work with our company live in downtown Boston and had carpooled.  So they offered me a ride and I got home super quick without any hassle.  Door to door service, gotta love it.  They said how they really enjoyed my presentation and that if I was ever looking into the business consulting field to give them a call, awesome compliment.  Then when I got home I did some blog stuff, some guitar stuff, and some teeth brushing.  So basically this evening was full of exciting material worth blogging about (NOT).

image

Getting a ride back from the conference center with two of the consultants my company hired. They both live downtown so they offered to give me a ride instead of having to take the train. Everyone at the conference was super impressed that I take public transit 100%, they didn't see how it was possible. It is indeed possible, just have to adjust your lifestyle a bit and put up having a variable schedule.

Picture of my blazer that I wore during my presentation. The dress was "casual" but as a general rule of thumb it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Got Boloco for dinner and spent some time uploading a few blog posts. Yay for free wifi.

image

I love Boloco, not necessarily because they make a good burrito (Anna's is way better), but I like them because everything that comes off of their counter can either be composted or recycled, brilliant. More companies should operate like Boloco.

More blog stuff, burrito gone.

On the Green Line T reading Dracula, chapter 9 to be exact. I'm getting excited for Halloween. I'm doing a 10k run Saturday and then going to various costume parties throughout the weekend. Reading Dracula has definitely put me in the mood for Halloween.

Just me admiring the guitar I refinished, I can't get over how great it sounds. It's got a very full yet bright sound to it, it resonantes well too.

Brushing your teeth is like taking out the recycling, it's not part of "business time", but it's important to do (A botched Flight of the Concords Reference).

I meant to go out tonight to acquire the materials for my Halloween costume.  In light of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal, I decided to be Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell for Halloween.  I’ll be cutting camo pants into short shorts (probably with the pockets showing), wearing an army t-shirt with boots and a camo scarf.  I think that’ll convey the point well enough.  Also I think I’ll put a large “x” through both of the “Don’ts” to drive the point home.  Also we’ll be in Salem on Saturday for a 10k so I’m excited to experience the infamy that is Salem (Salem Witch Trials anybody?).
